Artwork in collection: Inhotim

Boi de Piranha - Froiid

In September 2023, the Inhotim Institute opened, at Galeria Fonte, the new temporary exhibition: Making the modern, building the contemporary: Rubem Valentim as part of the Abdias Nascimento Program and the Black Art Museum and will remain on display until 2024. With a diversity of artists and techniques, the exhibition brings different possibilities of the black presence in the field of art and is jointly curated by Igor Simões, guest curator, and the institute's curator, with Lucas Menezes and Deri Andrade, assistant curators at Inhotim.

The central core of the exhibition Making the modern, building the contemporary: Rubem Valentim is made up of works from different periods of his production: from paintings from the 1950s, through his reliefs, objects and silkscreen emblems, to records of the construction of the “Marco Syncretic of Afro-Brazilian Culture", a concrete monument measuring more than eight meters high, erected in Praça da Sé, in São Paulo, in 1978. The exhibition also includes works by other artists that present intersections with the artistic work of Rubem Valentim, expanding the debates that the exhibition proposes.

The exhibition Making the modern, building the contemporary: Rubem Valentim presents a set of works from the Inhotim Institute collection that covers more than thirty years of the artist's production, combined with works provided by the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia, the Museum of Contemporary Art of São Paulo and the Pampulha Art Museum.

Alongside the works of Rubem Valentim, works by other artists such as Mestre Didi, Rosana Paulino, Emanoel Araujo, Jaime Lauriano, Rebeca Carapiá, Allan Weber, Bené Fonteles, Rubiane Maia, Froiid and Jorge dos Anjos are incorporated into the exhibition. New works commissioned by Instituto Inhotim are exhibited by Minas Gerais artists Froiid and Jorge dos Anjos. The first presents an installation made up of 25 paintings that will have their arrangement changed daily. Jorge dos Anjos brings two steel sculptures, one displayed in the gallery space and the other in the external area. In conjunction with the exhibition space, the exhibition has a studio space that will be activated based on pedagogical programming built by Educativo do Inhotim.
