The Armory Show: Nova Iorque

For the Solo section of The Armory Show, Albuquerque Contemporânea proposes a project by José Bechara, a Brazilian artist whose work occupies a central position in the development of contemporary Brazilian abstraction, centered on his ongoing investigation of the fragile boundary between constructive order and material entropy.

The booth will bring together a large, immersive polyptych and a concise group of paintings, further developing Bechara's long-standing engagement with geometry as a disciplinary structure-constantly tested by the passage of time, oxidation, and gravity. In these works, constructed through procedures and layers rather than brushwork, "mapped" surfaces emerge: grids, lines, and measured intervals are set against fields of corrosion, stains, and chromatic sedimentation, allowing controlled geometry to coexist with the unpredictable action of matter. The works operate simultaneously as abstract painting and as architectural diagram-windows, frames, and permeable planes that destabilize depth and require the displacement of both gaze and body.

In dialogue with the paintings, the presentation includes a core of small graphic sculptures: open, hollow cubes, arranged as a quiet constellation within the booth space. These works translate the artist's graphic logic into the environment, where balance is always provisional and perception shifts with light and reflection.

The proposed works are recent and form a rigorous, cohesive exhibition, underscoring Bechara's exemplary command of process, structure, and poetic instability.
