Institutional exhibition: Paço Imperial

Naturas - assim eu vejo - Claudia Jaguaribe

The landscape and the botanical universe entered Claudia Jaguaribe's life from an early age, being one of the favorite interests of her grandfather Francisco, geographer and author of a significant part of Brazilian cartography. The early attraction to the theme was decisive in the artist's trajectory, which sharpened her vision and delved deeper into the landscape and aspects of nature. Naturas: Assim eu vejo, which opens at Paço Imperial, curated by Heloísa Amaral Peixoto, brings together works that are part of a research that begins with the series “Tudo é Sofia”, from 2004, and extends to more recent and unpublished works , carried out with Artificial Intelligence resources in “Viveiro”, 2023. With a full schedule both nationally and internationally, having carried out projects at Usina de Arte (Recife), exhibitions in São Paulo, in addition to participating this year in the Festival Off and On, Brasil Unprevisto, in Arles (France), where she exhibited on an outdoor screen, Claudia chose the city of Rio to show this selection of her old and most current works, entirely focused on environmental issues. Occupying the Amarela and Mestre Valentim rooms, the exhibition presents a double research: a particular vision on how to portray landscape and nature and the radical changes that have occurred in photography in our visual culture. The initial works were made in an analogue way, with a simple pinhole camera until the latest, with digital photography, and, in its most advanced stage, including AI.

Naturas, in Latin, refers to the multiplicity of natures that exist in the world and ‘that’s how I see it’ in my way of using photography as a means of knowledge and a form of expression. From the initial rehearsals I realized that I needed to take ownership of photography as one of the aspects of the creative process. Documentary photography serves me as an image bank, a basis for the development of other languages. Each new project demands its own approach, which involves many layers of production”, says the artist.

“By proposing an idealized microcosm, Claudia would, in a way, be seeking to establish a relationship between nature, in the broadest sense, and nature, in the most interior and subjective sense. Also in the treatment of the images in this set, an atmosphere of a more symbolic nature is perceived, tending towards the fictional, an interest that will intensify further in subsequent projects”, says the curator, Heloísa Amaral Peixoto.

“Her production is marked by reflections and concerns regarding the fragility of environmental balance, delving deeper into works that constantly refer to others, although they have different directions and contours”.
