Institutional exhibition: Centenary of Modern Art Week

Chris Tigra

In 2022, Theatro Municipal celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Modern Art Week, a movement that brought together artists and intellectuals who were willing to renew the artistic environment of the time and begin a period of appreciation for an essentially national culture.

In 1922, between the 13th and 17th of February, the artistic-cultural manifesto brought together various dance, music, poetry recitals, exhibitions of works – painting and sculpture – and lectures. Renowned artists such as Mário de Andrade, Di Cavalcanti, Anita Malfatti, Oswald de Andrade, among others, brought a new vision of art to the country. The movement, which gave rise to Modernism in Brazil, shocked a large part of the population and broke with academic art by bringing an aesthetic and social revolution.

To do justice to this movement, the Municipal will present, from the 10th to the 17th of February, a special program, which includes performances by the Municipal Symphony Orchestra, the Paulistano Choir, the String Quartet and the City Ballet, a series of meetings, shows, a soiree and expeditions and various activities. On the 10th, the celebration begins with the artistic installation Recostura, by artivist Chris Tigra, which will remain on the main facade of the Theater until March 10, 2022.
