Raquel Schembri, 1984–2016, Belo Horizonte, Brazil
Raquel Schembri was a Brazilian visual artist who left her mark on her generation with sensitive works that were deeply connected to the social and cultural context in which she lived. She graduated from the Guignard School/UEMG in Visual Arts (2005), and complemented her education with a specialization in Painting at the renowned Akademie der Bildenden Künste München, in Germany (2012), under the guidance of artist Karin Kneffel. She also completed a postgraduate degree in Fashion Design at the Fundação Mineira de Educação e Cultura (2006).
Her artistic production engaged intensely with contemporary issues, exploring themes such as identity, memory and space. Throughout her career, she participated in several international artistic residencies, including stints in England, Germany, Serbia, Brazil and South Korea.
Raquel held solo and group exhibitions in important cultural spaces around the world. Her solo exhibitions include Solo (2010) at the Palácio das Artes in Belo Horizonte and Inventário (2018) at Mamacadela, also in Belo Horizonte. She has also participated in internationally significant group exhibitions, such as the International Graffiti Biennial (2008) in Brazil and Consciousness, Latin American Consciousness (2014) in London.
Even after her premature death in 2016, during the birth of her daughter Marta, her work remains alive, continuing to inspire artists and raise awareness among audiences in different parts of the world. Raquel Schembri left a unique legacy, consolidating herself as one of the most powerful artistic voices of her generation.
