Biography

Rochelle Costi, 1961, Caxias do Sul, RS, Brasil – São Paulo, SP, 2022

Photographer, multimedia artist. Having started her career with photography in the field of theatre and music, the artist went on to develop personal works using photography in objects and installations, proposing creations around themes such as collective life in the city and the problem of personal identity.

She graduated in social communication from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUC/RS), Porto Alegre, in 1981. The following year, she spent six months in Belo Horizonte and attended art studios at the Guignard School and an extension course on 19th century photographic processes at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). In 1988, she moved to São Paulo, where she worked in editorial photography. Rochelle lived in London between 1991 and 1992, during which time she studied at the Saint Martin School of Art and at Camera Work. Her work in newspapers and magazines allowed her to come into contact with different environments, which stimulated her research into private spaces and resulted in photographic series in which she recorded the façades and interiors of houses. By utilising images and materials from everyday life, Rochelle Costi's work proposes, in photographs and videos, a new look at everyday moments in urban life and the defining elements of human identity. She is a member of private and public art collections, including: Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand; Brazil;

Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo, Brazil; Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation, Miami, USA

Inhotim Contemporary Art Centre Collection, Brumadinho, Brazil.
