He has a PhD in Arts (2015), a Master's degree (2002) and an undergraduate degree in Fine Arts from the School of Fine Arts at UFMG. He took part in Atelier Galpão Embra, an artists' collective that organised various events in Belo Horizonte in the 1990s. Since then Roberto has taken part in various exhibitions in Brazil and abroad, including the Arco fair in Madrid and the Pinta fair in New York.

Bethonico has won prizes at various art shows, including the Visiting Artist Award at the Tamarind Institute, New Mexico, USA. He has works in the collections of the museums MAM São Paulo; MAM Rio de Janeiro/Coleção Gilberto Chateaubrian, Coleção Madeira Corporate Service, Portugal and Museu de Arte da Pampulha. The notions of transience and impermanence; natural and artificial; presence and absence; internal and external landscape surround and orbit his works, which include drawings, objects, installations, photographs, interventions and picture books.
